Pelangi was founded in 1979 by 3 former teachers who saw the potential demand for locally written revision books in Bahasa Malaysia, the national language of Malaysia. The partners’ primary objective back then was to assist students in their effort to prepare for the new examination system. As a result, translations of past- year examination papers with suggested model answers for core subjects, such as mathematics and science, became their first publications in 1979.
In 1980, the founders established Pelangi Education Enterprise and was renamed it as Penerbitan Pelangi Sdn. Bhd. in 1982. It formally carried the brand name of Pelangi Publishing – derived from its place of origin in Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru, Malaysia. In 1987, Pelangi was awarded by MoE to publish its first textbook – Additional Mathematic Form 4 & Form 5. Pelangi began participating at the Frankfurt International Bookfair in 1987 to expand its business internationally. Pelangi has since then formed strategic partnership with international publishing houses including Walt Disney, Dorling Kindersley, JK Rowling, Usborne Publishing, etc.
Pelangi Publishing Group Bhd. commonly called Pelangi, is a regional educational publishing and printing company established in 1979. Pelangi headquarters in Malaysia and has subsidiaries in Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, China and the United Kingdom.
In 2002, Pelangi was the first academic publisher awarded ISO9001:2000 certificate in Quality Management System. Today, Pelangi Publishing Group is a full-fledged educational publisher, specializing in editorial, illustration, printing and distribution services.

Pelangi penetrated into the printing business with the establishment of Comtech Marketing Sdn. Bhd. in 1983, followed by Pelangi Formpress Sdn. Bhd. in 1988 and acquisition of The Commercial Press Sdn. Bhd. in 2002.
Pelangi is then a fully integrated publisher capable of completing the entire publishing process under one roof. From initial script to editing and illustration, typesetting and colour setting and finally to printing, binding, packing and distribution.
