The protagonist, Asong, dreams of becoming an excellent beast tamer. General Moses and his wife are the foster parents who raised Asong, and his origins remain a mystery. Doran, the daughter of the chief of the Dara tribe on Earth, is childhood friends with Asong.
Princess Sua of the alien race, the Holters, shares a sibling-like bond with Asong, and her dream is also to become a beast tamer. Beast taming competitions are the proudest traditional activity of the Dara tribe, and the young beast tamer, Xixi, is their revered teacher.
